November 2017: Relaxing Outside of Work and Writing

Happy November everyone! Luckily, I am typing this in a warm house rather than being outside in this rather cold weather. Today I wanted to talk a little of other things than my writing, focusing on how I relax outside of work.

Of course writing is something I really enjoy (why else would I be writing this or any of my books) but sometimes you can do too much. In a similar way, I enjoy what I do at work (project management) but again you can over work and exhaust yourself making what you do counterproductive. It’s important that you enjoy what you do even if some parts are harder / not as interesting; you must, however, find time to relax.

For me some of the things I do to relax are exercise, meditation, seeing friends or family, watching Netflix or reading. Exercise, in particular, is an effective method for me: it increases endorphins to make you feel good and also gives the same sense of achievement as working hard. It is important, however, that I do enough of the other things to let my mind and body rest.

Of course there are different types of relaxation for different people. Watching films may not be for you; you may prefer a long walk (which is also something that I like). It’s important to know what makes you happy and what relaxes your mind and body so you can mix hard work with allowing yourself time to rest and recover.

One of my greatest flaws, which people often remind of, is that I work too hard in everything. This is probably true so I have recently tried hard to invest time in finding ways to relax more. As a result, I have become a lot happier whether that is as a result of sitting down to play my PlayStation 4 for half an hour in the evening or going out for a walk.

So what I am saying today is even though it’s important to work hard and know what you are working towards, it’s also important to take a step back and not make your life too hard. I can think of some people on both ends of this spectrum and as with anything, nobody is perfect.

I hope for now that you find this blog useful and I look forward to writing to you all next month.
