July 2016: My Introduction to Blogging and Writing ‘The Universe of the Lamppost’

As an individual relatively new to the world of e-book publishing, I am also new to the world of blogging. Having read various blogs written by a variety of writers, it always raises the question of what to write. Having written in different ways and genres through my life, whether it is for a story, report, essay or a blog, I find it is best to note a thought or idea down which can then be worked on later. Anyone could spend hours, days or weeks trying to make a perfect opening and follow-up but once you start, you have the power to change what you have written and re-visit it later.

Therefore for my first blog, I thought where better to start than my very first book: ‘The Universe of the Lamppost’: a book that I published in April 2016. This book took me on an adventure through my imagination, and although there were writing blocks at times, the excitement and freedom I gained through creating a world (or universe!) of my own, was very exciting. I based the idea of this book on my imagination and those dreams that I had as a young child. I would look out of the window of my home and see an odd- looking lamppost. I always wondered whether the lamppost would absorb me into its light. Many years later, I thought this idea could be the basis for a children’s fiction story.

How I approached writing this book will perhaps differ from how I continue to write in the future. When writing that first book, I had an idea and some basic points for a story but planned less than I am now doing for my current book. I wanted to see where my imagination took me rather than mapping out the story. Lots of different writers have different approaches, so the planning / writing balance really depends on what is best for you. It was exciting to find out an ending as I went along, rather than plan this from the outset.

Since the book has been published, I now realise what I have to do regarding the marketing of this book. A book could have a fantastic storyline but if people do not know it exists, and then nobody will read it. The enjoyment of writing a book is, of course, of prime importance to me but the marketing and publishing of such books, is an adventure itself and one on which I am about to embark on.
